A contemporary Swedish comedy where on one side of the equation stands capital, and on the other, the value of our lives.
Jonas Hassen Khemiri (born 1978) is one of the most recognized and most translated contemporary Swedish authors, introduced to the Slovenian theater scene for the first time with the play ≈ [Approximately Equal To]. The symbol ≈ in mathematics and economics denotes the meaning of an approximate equation, placing capital on one side and the value of human life on the other. Khemiri, who besides literature also studied economics, explores the position (and value) of all of us trapped in the dictatorship of modern capitalist systems in this play. Despite the extremely complex subject matter, he has managed to create a vividly thoughtful and rich world that unfolds before us more than twenty intertwined human destinies. The text constantly moves on the thin line between the absurd and humorous sequences of our lives on one side and the harsh darkness of the social and economic system on the other, creating a precise and thoughtful diagnosis of our present. Director Maša Pelko will present the stories of numerous protagonists through their daily struggle with the burden of capitalist logic that dictates their intimate relationships, perception of the past, and decisions about the future.
