The unusual circumstances surrounding the creation of this rarely performed work by Puccini, which the management of the former Carltheater conceived as a kind of hybrid between operetta and Richard Strauss’ opera “Der Rosenkavalier,” ultimately bore fruit in the form of the three-act opera “The Swallow.” Despite featuring authentic Puccinian harmonies and a complex love story between the courtesan Magda and the young man Ruggero, their romance strongly recalls that of Verdi’s “La Traviata,” so expect dazzling stage splendor, passion, and the fantasy of youthful love dreams.
