The Man Who Tamed the Lightning
The Man Who Tamed the Lightning
Opera in ten scenes
Librettist Robert Mraček
The Slovenian opera entitled The Man Who Tamed the Lightning is aimed at upper primary and secondary school students. In ten scenes, it depicts the most important stages in the life of one of the most famous scientists and inventors of modern times, Nikola Tesla. The composer and librettist Robert Mraček drew on his research into Tesla’s life and his experimental work in the field of electromagnetism. The opera aims to highlight the pitfalls of progress and the misunderstanding of a genius whose ideas were exploited by capitalism and neoliberal society for their own benefit rather than for the good of humanity and our planet. The opera’s music, which features numerous visual effects, uses original musical codes in the form of leitmotifs and reminiscences that appeal convincingly to young audiences and invite them to search for scientific and social truths themselves.
